The City of the Dead

A new documentary film “The City of the Dead” will be screened tomorrow at 7pm (Monday 13 Feb) at the Italian Institute in Zamalek-3 el sheikh el marsafy street (in front of Beano’s)

Below is the film synopsis which claims “a million people live inside the cemetary.” According to David Sims’ Understanding Cairo that number is severely exaggerated. A more realistic estimate based on several censes conducted throughout the last quarter of the 20th century would suggest that the real number of inhabitats is closer to 100,000 person. The various cemetaries, northern and southern (Shaf’i) are facinating with a mixture of lively communities, historic architecture and tombs. This film sheds light on this unique urban condition.

The “City of the Dead” in Cairo is the largest necropolis in the world. A million people live inside the cemetery – in tomb houses, or in the buildings that have grown up around them. The cemetery has everything: bakeries, cafes, children’s schools and puppet theatres… Although the City of the Dead extends for more than ten kilometers along a motorway, it is still a village where mothers scheme to find the best match for their daughters, boys chase girls, and neighbors fight. Prepared and shot over five years (2004-2009), this film aspires to show the invisible soul of the cemetery.
